The law firm of Graham Thompson congratulates its Moot team on a very strong showing in this year’s joint Moot on matters related to trusts and estate planning. The competition is staged annually by STEP Bahamas and the Council of Legal Education Eugene Dupuch Law School (EDLS). Team Graham Thompson was the 2017 defending champion.
This year’s team comprised Graham Thompson Associate Samuel Brown and EDLS students McFalloughn Bowleg and Gabriel Brown. Rules require that teams include a young attorney with under five years of practice experience, two students and advisors including legal practitioners. The team’s advisors were Graham Thompson partners Robert Adams and Leif Farquharson and Associate John Minns.
The competition simulates a hearing in an action commenced by an Originating Summons. The Moot question, outlines the issues between disputing parties in the action. The 2018 Moot question, authored by Sean McWeeney QC, a senior partner in Graham Thompson, concerned the possible effects of the so-called “Two Party Rule”, where the sole trustee of two or more related trusts purports to contract solely with itself, albeit as trustee of the respective trusts.
The Graham Thompson team represented the defendant in the matter.
Mr. Adams, a senior partner, described the Moot as a well fought competition. He congratulated the team on a very strong effort, applauding in particular the lead of Associate Samuel Brown. The work of the students he said was an example of hard work and committed effort. The students he said demonstrated tremendous progress over the course of their preparation for the competition.
